"First Lay In"

I learned this term somewhere in school, probably in Hillary Holmes class at the Art student's league. but maybe before that even, I'm not sure.

In any case it refers to filling the canvas with the broad colors and their relationship to one another. It's  the 'big look' of how the painting will look at the end. It's the first session of painting leading then to a reassessment of how then to proceed. Take your pick.
